LIBERTY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Liberty County Historical Society was founded by people who recognized the need to focus on the area’s treasure trove of historic sites, artifacts, documents and other memorabilia. As history is created, the need for its preservation is essential in planning for the future. The Liberty County Historical Society is committed to preserving, documenting and recording the history and heritage of Liberty County, Georgia.

Liberty County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was Founded February 5, 1777. Sunbury was first designated the county seat in 1784. In 1797, the seat was transferred to Riceboro; and in 1837, it was transferred to Hinesville.

As of the 2010 census, the population was 63,453. The county seat is still Hinesville. Liberty County is part of the Hinesville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Savannah-Hinesville-Statesboro Combined Statistical Area.
